I have a problem hen trying to download waypoints from a new Garmin Map62S. Mapmaker cannot communicate with the GPS unit. The unit is properly installed on the computer and I can download the .gpx files using windows explorer.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem and have you found an answer?

Bit of a long shot but you might find something of help in this topic, eg the new Garmin perhaps uses a different USB protocol than did the earlier models.

Good luck,

The new breed of Garmin's do not use the Garmin protocol for downloading waypoints, routes and tracks. The Garmin simply appears as another disk drive and you copy waypoints by copying the relevant GPX file. In Map Maker you use Utilities - GPS utilities - Import data - GPX to import the waypoints.

Thank you for your reply. I had finally figured out the workaround you suggest i.e downloading the .gpx file and converting.

I also spent some time looking at the options in the GPS unit set up. You can choose various usb interface modes. The default is "usb mass storage device" mode. Another option is "Garmin Spanner" which allows you to choose usb storage device mode or not. I guess you would have to use the not option if you wanted to download real-time position data to a computer. The instruction manual tells you nothing about this, thank you Garmin.

In the Garmin Spanner mode, Mapmaker does recognise the GPS unit and the blue line appears in the drop down box saying it sees a Garmin device on a usb connection. However when you press the "download waypoints from device" button, nothing happens. I guess the new Garmin protocol is not backwards compatible.

Hi Irvine,

I have the Garmin GPSmap 62ST, which is similar. I think importing into Garmin's Basecamp software you can view the data and then export a .shp file.

I had another work around. Pay for the ExpertGPS support license, and they have written the scripts to recognise the new Garmin, then you can export the GPX file that way.

Just one tip. I found to my cost that the new GPSmap 62ST does not save your waypoints and other data until you power it off. So if you allow it to drain the batteries and switch itself off, you have nothing. I rattled Garmins cage about this, and they said it's functioning as designed. Older Garmins write the data as they go along.

Cheers

Mark

Dear all,

I am measuring field margins for an estate in Scotland and I have the same problem - not being able to download waypoints from my Garmin GPSmap 62s on to Mapmaker by using the Utilities/ GPS Utilities/ Import Data/ Download Waypoints tool plus have not really understood the suggested fixes in this topic thread... I wonder if someone could kindly provide a step-by-step guide for a "dummy"!

Many thanks,

Daniel

OK. Here goes,

Switch on the Garmin and connect it to your PC. Windows Explorer will see it as an external disc drive.
Copy or cut and paste the .gpx file on the Garmin and save it on your hard drive.
Start MapMaker and select Utilities > GPS Utilities > Import Data > GPX > Select your .gpx file > select Save and MapMaker will convert it to a .dra file.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much Irvine...

I have followed your instructions successfully up to this point:

Switch on the Garmin and connect it to your PC. Windows Explorer will see it as an external disc drive. Copy or cut and paste the .gpx file on the Garmin and save it on your hard drive. Start MapMaker and select Utilities > GPS Utilities > Import Data >

...but then I don't have a drop-down option to choose GPX > Select your .gpx file > select Save and MapMaker will convert it to a .dra file.

Perhaps I am running an outdated version of Mapmaker?

Yours,

Daniel

Are you running the full version of MapMaker or MapMaker Gratis? Gratis does not have all the features enabled.

If you have the full licensed version then select Help > About MapMaker
The little box that pops up will give you information about the date your version of MapMaker was installed. Mine is 28 Nov 2013.

You can update to the latest version at no charge at www.mapmaker.com , just go to the downloads tab.

Dear Irvine,

Thank you again for your reply. I have updated my Mapmaker Pro 3.5 and now have followed your instructions as below:

Switch on the Garmin and connect it to your PC. Windows Explorer will see it as an external disc drive. Copy or cut and paste the .gpx file on the Garmin and save it on your hard drive. Start MapMaker and select Utilities > GPS Utilities > Import Data > GPX > Select your .gpx file > select Save and MapMaker will convert it to a .dra file.

I then loaded the saved .dra file as a layer but am still not seeing any waypoints appearing on the project no matter what style set I select... I do feel that I am almost there but not quite!

With thanks for your patience,

Daniel

I wonder if your Garmin is set to WGS84 or British Grid? If it is set to WGS84 the position will be recorded in Lat and Long and will not show up on screen in a project which is set to British OS Grid.

In Mapmaker clear the screen and then choose File>Add layer and select your converted .gpx file. Have a look at the bottom left hand corner of the screen to see if the position of the cursor is shown in Metres or in Lat and Long. If the latter you have one more conversion step to do.

Select Utilities>Latitude and Longitude Utilities> WGS84 Lat/Long file to XY > Vector and then in the dialogue box select OS Map. MapMaker will then convert the file to OS coordinates.

Hope this helps
