Hello everybody, it is me again, with a new difficulty.

I want to import an existing Garmin MapSource .gpx file into MapMaker. Although I manage to transfer the file, its calibration is wrong and I do not know how to fix it, nor how to proceed to import correctly.

Here is what I did.

I recorded a file (tracks and waypoints) with my Garmin GPS Map 60 csx and saved it on my computer as a .gpx file using Garmin MapSource. As you can see on the image, the calibration is ok:

31T 588092 5209255,485 m (link below, calibration info on the bottom left of the image)

http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/cheminsetlimites2-mapsource.php

Then I imported this .gpx file using MM, following the standard procedure (utilities menu / GPS utilities / import data / GPX) and saved it as a .dra file. When opening this .dra file, my tracks and waypoints appear clearly on my screen.

However, the calibration seems wrong: when opening the project manager and checking layers / files / detail / calibration, I can see that this calibration data starts with figures like:

Min X: 4.15 / Min Y: 47.03 etc. (link below)

http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/projectmanager1137am3sept.php

If I compare with a correctly calibrated .dra file that represents tracks which are at the very same location on the field, I can see the difference in calibration:

Min X: 586827.42 / Min Y: 5207863.00 etc. (link below)

And of course, when I open this correctly calibrated .dra file together with the imported file, they appear to be 3000 km away from one another on the screen (link below)!

So, obviously I have a calibration problem that I do not know how to solve: I tried different settings within MapSource (e.g. preferences / position) but could not manage to change anything in terms of result.

The point is MM does not offer any possibility of fine tuning the imports: just “open .gpx file” then “save .dra file”.

(Please not that I usually do not have any difficulty transferring files, for instance from MapSource to GoogleEarth: tracks and waypoints appear on GE exactly where they should be.)

So, could anybody help me to solve my problem and explain me how to correctly import a .gpx file? Thanks a lot!

From what I can see your .gpx file is in WGS84 Lat/Long format but the map on which you are trying to overlay your gps data is in a metric XY format.

Try using the function Utilities>Latitude and Longitude Utilities>WGS84 Lat/Long to XY>Vector and then choose your map projection.

Thanks a lot, Irvine!

Yes, this was the problem and you gave me the right solution.

An additional issue was that I had two different map projection in my system: a) OS Map and b) My own projection; and one of them was not tuned correctly (UTM # was not correct), so my conversions failed.

So I advise everyone having the same issue as me to delete one of those two map projections and just use the other one, after it has been tuned adequately.

Thank you again.
